Color Photography

In color, Joseph looks for abstraction: an underlying geometric order in the way the elements of a scene come together. He is drawn to texture, repetition and color itself, and to how they combine to give an image its particular feeling. Many of these photographs work like small paintings, composed from whatever is in front of him.

Every image here is square, a format that has long appealed to him in both color and black and white. Most were made with his phone, then color balanced and adjusted for contrast.

Joseph often works with images in pairs or multiples, exploring how pictures speak to each other through form and content.

His black-and-white work begins differently. There, Joseph imagines how a scene will look in shades of gray, paying close attention to contrast and to how light gives a form its shape. In color, he responds to what he sees; in black and white, he pictures what it will become.
